Description
Michelia figo, also known as Port Wine Magnolia or Banana Shrub, is a charming evergreen shrub prized for its glossy green foliage and unique, fragrant flowers. It typically grows to a height of about 1.8-2m with a similar spread forming a dense and rounded shape. The leaves are oval-shaped and leathery, emitting a subtle banana-like fragrance when crushed. From late spring to early summer, Michelia figo produces small, creamy white to yellowish flowers with maroon centers. These flowers are highly fragrant, resembling the scent of ripe bananas or port wine, hence its common names. This shrub prefers well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun, making it suitable for borders, containers, or as a standalone specimen in gardens where its fragrance and ornamental value can be appreciated.
